“Stelle bei der Salweide”. What does this mean? This is Salingen’s name origin. We are standing in Salingen, a small part of Dortmund. It is a place with a rich history dating back to the year 801.

Salingen is located on the southwestern edge of Dortmund. It belongs to the Hombruch district. With only 145 residents in 2018, it was Dortmund’s second smallest district.

Salingen consists of two parts. There is the Bauerschaft Salingen. It is a scattered settlement in the Salinger Feld. It lies east of the road between Eichlinghofen and Annen. The A 45 and A 44 highways border it. Then, there is the Siedlung Salingen. It is a small village. It is located at the northern end of the area next to the A 45. The highway separates it from Eichlinghofen.

The Salinger Feld slopes to the south. From the north, it offers a view of Salingen and Tiefendorf. Witten and the Ardey mountains are in the background. Salingen is close to the A 44. It is less than 1 km from the Witten-Annen exit.

In 801, Salingen was first mentioned. This makes it one of the oldest places in Hombruch. Around 1150, it was mentioned in the records of Werden Abbey. Around 1220, it appeared in the registers of Essen Abbey. From 1288 to 1399, the name “de Saley” appeared in documents. In 1392, the place was called “Saley”. Around 1450, it was called “to Salii”. The name Salingen became common after 1841.

Salingen was part of the County of Mark. In 1486, three landowners had to pay taxes. In 1705, five taxpayers in Sahlingen paid taxes. The name Salingen means “place by the willow”.

In the mid-19th century, Salingen had about 10 farms. There were around 80 residents. The population grew because of miners. By 1905, it had 249 residents. In 1924 and 1925, the Siedlung Salingen was built.

In 1921, Salingen was incorporated into Barop. In 1929, it became part of Dortmund. Salingen belonged to the parish of Eichlinghofen. Today, it is a statistical sub-district of Eichlinghofen.

The Salinger Feld is known for its three wind turbines. The Salingen stud farm is also well known. It is located at the southern end of the settlement. From 132 residents in 2003 the number of inhabitants increased to 149 in 2013, before the number decreased again to 145 residents in 2018.

Salingen has seen many changes over the centuries. From its early mention in 801 to its current status as a district of Dortmund, its history is closely linked to the region.
