The Salinera EspaƱola SA company later took over. They operated Salines des Morroig until 1984. This industry represented Formentera’s sole economic engine before tourism’s arrival.
Salines des Morroig is a sophisticated system. It cleverly uses Estany Pudent. This large lake is situated to the north of the island. Seawater flows into a channel. This allows for increased salt concentration. Then via ingenious mechanisms the water enters a network of ponds. There the salt crystallizes. This is where the salt was then harvested.
