Imagine the scene in 1873. Antoni Marroig a shrewd businessman from Mallorca purchased these very salt flats. He wasn’t the first. Salt harvesting here likely dates back to antiquity. Written records however only appear in 13th-century documents. Marroig’s acquisition marked a significant moment. It initiated a period of intensive salt production. The Salinera EspaƱola SA company later took over. They operated Salines des Morroig until 1984. This industry represented Formentera’s sole economic engine before tourism’s arrival.

Salines des Morroig is a sophisticated system. It cleverly uses Estany Pudent. This large lake is situated to the north of the island. Seawater flows into a channel. This allows for increased salt concentration. Then via ingenious mechanisms the water enters a network of ponds. There the salt crystallizes. This is where the salt was then harvested.

Declared a Cultural Site in 2004 Salines des Morroig stands as a remarkable historical place. Consider the intricate engineering. The system of ponds the ingenious water mechanisms. These showcase human ingenuity. The tools used were simple. Workers employed wooden rakes and shovels. They also used animal-drawn carts for transport. Later steam-powered machines and even small locomotives modernized the process.

In 1984 economic pressures forced the closure of Salines des Morroig. The operation briefly resumed in 2008 producing liquid salt amongst other things. Today though the salt ponds are protected. They serve as a captivating reminder of Formentera’s rich past. The salt’s golden history is a captivating reminder of the island’s resilience and resourcefulness.
