Remember that time in 1972? Salford Shopping Centre opened its doors then. A new era dawned for Pendleton. The area had undergone massive slum clearances. Thousands of terraced houses were demolished. A bold new city centre was planned. Salford Shopping Centre was its heart. It wasn’t easy though. Construction was plagued by setbacks. A political scandal even halted progress. The original plans were ambitious. Two hundred and sixty shops were envisioned. A hotel was to grace the scene. A two-storey car park was also planned. But funds ran dry. Only ninety-five shops opened in the end. The hotel and car park remained dreams. Salford Shopping Centre opened nonetheless. Tesco was one of the first tenants. Salford Market opened the year before. The market became part of the bustling precinct. Over the years Salford Shopping Centre faced challenges. In 1994 the council considered selling it. Some saw it as selling the family silver. The shopping centre changed hands eventually. It was sold in 2000 then again in 2010. New investment flowed in. The 2011 riots caused damage. Shops on Hankinson Way suffered. Looting and arson marred the event. A new Tesco superstore nearby stirred controversy. Its construction meant the demolition of a school and a church. Local traders worried about competition. Legal battles ensued. The Tesco store opened in 2012 anyway. Despite setbacks Salford Shopping Centre persevered. It adapted. The original market was replaced. Aldi and KFC added to its offerings. Further development was planned. But as of 2021 these plans remain unrealized. Salford Shopping Centre stands today. A testament to resilience. It’s a hub of activity. A vital part of Salford’s life.
