Salem Lutheran Cemetery Plaque

The Salem Lutheran Cemetery is a testament to the early German settlers of the Rosehill community in Texas, and a reminder of the challenges they faced in building their lives in a new land. The cemetery is a peaceful place, its worn headstones and weathered trees whispering tales of lives lived and loved. This cemetery has a distinct German heritage and many of its oldest headstones bear words and phrases in German, such as ‘Geboren’ (born) and ‘Gestorben’ (died). It was founded in 1869, when George Scherer transferred property to Salem Lutheran Church. This cemetery served as a place of final rest for many early Rosehill residents and for those who attended the church but lived in nearby communities such as Cypress Top, Decker Prairie, and Willow Creek. The cemetery contains approximately 1,020 burial sites, many of which are marked with simple, vertical stones. But look closely at the headstones, for they reveal the stories of those who lived in this community. The Salem Lutheran Cemetery is a unique place and a window into the past of the community. Its history is alive in its old tombstones and in the quiet dignity of its grounds.
