“Did the kings of Siam truly live like gods?” a curious voice whispers. Here, before the Sala Sattha Mahasathan, within Bangkok’s Grand Palace, that question hangs in the air. This hall, the Sala Sattha Mahasathan, played a vital role in the elaborate rituals and ceremonies of the Siamese court. The Sala Sattha Mahasathan stands as a testament to the intricate hierarchy and traditions that once governed this sacred space. Originally, this area within the Grand Palace housed the Suan Sai, or “Left Garden,” mirroring the Suan Khwa, or “Right Garden,” which is now the Siwalai Gardens. During King Rama III’s reign, a royal pavilion known as Phra Tamnak Tuek was erected in this garden for his mother, Princess Mother Sri Sulalai. King Rama IV later expanded the residence and gifted it to Queen Debsirindra. It was within these very walls that the future King Rama V was born in 1853. Upon ascending to the throne in 1868, Rama V initiated the construction of a grander collection of throne halls. This marked the birth of the Chakri Maha Prasat group. While the Chakri Maha Prasat Throne Hall now dominates the area, the Sala Sattha Mahasathan and the adjacent buildings provide a glimpse into the earlier history of this part of the palace. The Sala Sattha Mahasathan is a reminder of the layers of history and tradition woven into the fabric of the Grand Palace, where gardens transformed into royal residences, then into grand state buildings. The ghosts of kings and queens, courtiers and servants, still linger here, whispering stories of a time when Siam’s rulers commanded the dust beneath their feet.
