This square is more than pretty flowers. It’s a place where history unfolds before your eyes. Imagine the struggles faced by Japanese Americans during World War II. Many were unjustly incarcerated in internment camps. Governor Ralph Carr a courageous voice stood against this injustice. He welcomed them to Colorado a haven from the prejudice they faced elsewhere. Many settled in this very area around the Tri-State Buddhist Temple.

The temple a cornerstone of Sakura Square has stood proudly since 1947. It’s a place of worship community and cultural celebration. Notice the harmonious blend of old and new. Original businesses like Pacific Mercantile a family-run market have stood the test of time. They’ve served generations showcasing Japanese and Asian specialties.

The square itself is a testament to the community’s fortitude. Faced with urban renewal plans in the 1970s the community didn’t give up. They came together. They created Sakura Square a vibrant space that would preserve their heritage. Tamai Tower a nearby apartment complex was built to house aging Issei first-generation Japanese American residents. The Cherry Blossom Festival began in 1973 further solidifying the square as a cultural hub.

The Sakura Foundation now manages the square and the adjacent Tamai Tower. They are working on redevelopment plans. They aim to keep the square thriving for generations to come. This redevelopment respects the past while embracing the future. The buildings will be scanned and documented by the National Park Service. This ensures that their history is preserved.

Today Sakura Square stands as a symbol of hope strength and enduring cultural pride. It’s a reminder of how a community facing adversity can create something truly beautiful and lasting.
