“Did you know that this humble place is believed to be where Buddhism was first introduced to Japan?” That’s right. Welcome to Denpozan Saizenji Temple. This is no ordinary temple. Saizenji Temple is a sacred space. It is a unique blend of Buddhism and Shintoism.

Saizenji Temple’s story begins in 645. Hodō hermit came from India. He built a hermitage right here. This makes it a very special place. It is said to be the origin of Buddhism in Japan. Imagine this site as Japan’s oldest burial ground. It is a testament to the deep roots of faith and tradition.

Saizenji Temple isn’t just a Buddhist temple. It is also a dojo. It embraces Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. This makes it a melting pot of spiritual and philosophical ideas. You can feel the harmony.

Saizenji Temple is active today. Memorial services for ancestors are held in the main hall. They also take place on the temple grounds. You may notice Ryukanjo and Suijinsai. These are part of the Obon Daisegaki. This is a Great Segaki Ceremony.

The temple offers many prayers. These include prayers to Kobo Daishi and Bishamonten. Hakuryu Daimyojin also receives prayers. Hakuryu Daimyojin is one of the eight great dragon kings. People also pray to Kannon and Jizo. This place is a treasure. It is full of common people’s beliefs. These are folk beliefs.

Consider joining the New Year’s correction meeting. Perhaps attend the Setsubun meeting. The Shunju Higan meeting is also an option. It includes a Segaki meeting. Another unique event is the Ryukancho Daisegaki-e. You could also visit the Ten Nights event. The Eternal Shrine Memorial Service happens in spring and autumn. Special Memorial Services occur in May, October, and December. Mizuko-kyo is also practiced here. Don’t forget Denpo Tenjin.

Saizenji Temple is open to visitors. The hours are Monday to Friday, 10:00 to 16:00. August 23 hours are 12:00 to 15:00. The temple is always open. It is located at 5-7-4 Denpo, Konohana-ku, Osaka. The telephone number is 06-6461-5602.
