Peaceful Saiun-in stands before you. Its history whispers secrets. Saiun-in a sub-temple of Konkaikomyo-ji Temple is a place of profound serenity. Founded by Sogon it holds a unique place in Kyoto’s spiritual landscape.

Sogon a devoted follower of the Pure Land Sect found solace in the nenbutsu. After 11 years of training he returned to Kurodani. Ryoteki the 27th head priest of Konkaikomyo-ji granted him Shiunseki. This allowed Sogon to establish Saiun-in. His dedication attracted many followers and generous donations. Memorial services lasting thousands of days honored his life. A 100-year 40000-day service was conducted.

Saiun-in’s graveyard is more than just a resting place. It serves as a site of remembrance for 352 Aizu Domain retainers. Every June a poignant memorial service is held. The Aizu-Matsudaira family head is invited to this solemn occasion.
