Saints Peter and Paul Roman Catholic Church West Side stands proudly in the heart of Warrendale a neighborhood once bustling with Polish life. Its story began not in grand architectural plans but in the hopes and dreams of 40 Polish Catholic families. In 1923 a rumor of a new Ford plant ignited a migration. These families seeking a spiritual home approached Reverend Adalbert Zadala. He guided them in establishing their own parish.
A small temporary brick chapel first served their needs. Built for a mere $5400 it marked the humble beginnings of Saints Peter and Paul. Dedicated on December 24 1923 its first midnight Mass was a testament to their faith amidst challenging circumstances. Many parishioners worked tirelessly both in factories and on the church construction itself.
The church wasn’t always on its current location. Initially situated on Tireman and Warwick it was later moved to its present home at Grandville Avenue. This new location was made possible by Peter Zielinski who generously donated the land. The little white wooden church as it was affectionately known witnessed countless weddings baptisms and funerals.
The story of Saints Peter and Paul is one of growth and adaptation. A school was added in 1926 staffed by laywomen and followed by the arrival of teaching sisters from Sylvania Ohio. Over the years multiple buildings were added reflecting the parish’s increasing size and the various societies established within its walls. The Holy Rosary Society the Holy Name Society and others fostered community and preserved traditions.
The Great Depression tested the community’s spirit but it didn’t break it. Funds were painstakingly raised for a new larger church. This culminated in the construction of a stunning two-level structure completed in 1959. Archbishop John F Dearden’s Solemn Dedication Mass marked a monumental occasion.
The church continued to evolve reflecting the changes in the city. The school expanded and then sadly closed later due to lower enrollment. Through it all though Saints Peter and Paul has remained a beacon a testament to the unwavering faith of generations of Polish Catholics in Detroit. The church celebrates its centennial in 2023. Its history lives on not only in its walls but in the countless stories and memories woven into its fabric.
Today as you stand here you can almost hear the echoes of past masses the joyful sounds of children at play in the school and the murmur of conversations in the Polish language that once filled these very halls.
