Founded in 1916 Saints Home Church of God in Christ stands proudly before you. This isn’t just any church. It’s the first Church of God in Christ on the entire West Coast. Imagine Elder Eddie R Driver Sr arriving in Los Angeles in 1914. He came at the request of Bishop Charles H Mason a momentous task. He established this ministry in a vacant schoolhouse. A humble beginning for a church with a rich history.
Elder Driver’s wife Mother Annie played a crucial role. She became the first State Mother of the Church of God in Christ on the West Coast. Their sons were musically gifted adding to the church’s vibrant spirit. They were a family deeply devoted to God. Their legacy resonates through the walls of this church.
Tragedy struck in 1943 when Overseer Driver passed away. His son Elder Louie M Driver Sr took over. He modernized the old schoolhouse sanctuary adding a baptismal pool. He had a unique style of preaching. Healings were witnessed. Walking canes and wheelchairs once used by parishioners now adorn the walls. A testament to the power of faith.
Elder Louie also held the esteemed position of Bishop of Southwest Jurisdiction a legacy passed to Bishop Hillrie Murphy today. His son Elder Louie Jr continued the family’s dedication. He served as Assistant Pastor attending La Verne University to deepen his theological understanding. In 1972 he became the church’s pastor.
The church moved to 7801 S Main Street. It faced new challenges gang activity. Pastor Louie Jr fought back with prayer fasting community involvement. He even engaged with local gangs asking for their help protecting the church. This unusual strategy built trust and some neighbors even started attending services.
Pastor Louie Jr had a special passion for youth. He organized annual three-day camping trips. These trips taught teamwork appreciation for nature and most importantly faith. After his passing in 1997 several pastors continued his legacy. Dr Eld Richard Buckner Sr is remembered for his enthusiastic preaching. His vision “Depopulate Hell and Populate Heaven” reflects the church’s mission.
Today Elder Paul Grimes leads Saints Home Church. He’s focused on community outreach. He started a 4th Saturday ministry providing food clothing and exercise. He’s fostered relationships with the LAPD and neighboring churches. Saints Home continues to thrive evolving while staying true to its core values.
