A humble statue a simple gift. This unassuming object started a pilgrimage. Welcome to the Sainte-Rita de Vendeville. This sanctuary isn’t just a church. It’s a testament to faith hope and enduring devotion.
In 1928 a Lilloise named Jeanne Dypersin offered a statue of Saint Rita to this church. She wanted to thank the saint for a miracle. The church was then known as Saint-Eubert. It was quite poor. The statue wasn’t valuable. It was transported by train to Seclin. A farmer brought it to Vendeville.
Abbé Henri Dumortier blessed the statue. He established a confraternity for Saint Rita. Two years later a relic arrived from Cascia. This was Saint Rita’s resting place in Italy. The pilgrimage to Sainte-Rita de Vendeville boomed.
People come here year-round. They seek solace strength and miracles. The church fills during Holy Week. The large novena is another important time. The feast of the Assumption is also significant. On August 15th thousands gather for an outdoor mass. The church is simply too small.
The walls are covered in ex-votos. These offerings show gratitude for answered prayers. They tell stories of healing and hope. Saint Rita is the patron saint of impossible causes.
