Is it possible for a town to be named after a saint whose relic traveled all the way from Europe? That is the story of Saint-Zotique. The city got its name from Saint Zoticus of Comana. Let’s explore the story of this unique place.

Saint-Zotique is a city in Quebec. It sits on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Saint Francis. The city is about 45 minutes west of Montreal. Saint-Zotique is part of the Vaudreuil-Soulanges Regional County Municipality. The motto of Saint-Zotique is “Vivons heureux” meaning “Let’s live happily”.

The area’s first economic activities began in the mid-18th century. People harvested forests and farmed the land. Early names for the area included “Concession-du-Lac” and “Lac-Saint-François”. These names came from the nearby lake. It was also known as “Longueuil-sur-le-Lac” because it was part of the seigneury of New Longueuil. Another name was “Moulin-Biron” after the first sawmill owner.

Saint-Zotique officially became a parish around 1849. It separated from the parish of Saint-Polycarpe. A post office opened in 1854. The Parish Municipality of Saint-Zotique formed in 1855. The village itself split off from the parish in 1913. In 1967 the two municipalities merged again. In 2009 it became a municipality. Saint-Zotique achieved city status in 2023.

The name Saint-Zotique has an interesting origin. Bishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal brought a relic of Saint Zotique from Europe in 1849. He named the first parish after his return in honor of this saint.

Saint-Zotique is easily accessible. It is located on Route 338 near Autoroute 20. This provides direct links to Montreal Cornwall and Toronto.

Saint-Zotique offers many attractions. Its popular beach can host up to 10000 people. Nautical sports are popular on Lac Saint-François. The town also has a golf course. Nine canal entrances are primarily located between the Rivière-Beaudette border, Pointe au Foin and Route 338. Several dozen houses and chalets are arranged around these canals.

Saint-Zotique has several social and community activities. These include festivals Halloween events and a Christmas parade. The town also features a landscape where you can observe life in the fields and the evolution of crops.

Saint-Zotique is more than just a name. It is a place with a rich history. It is a place with a vibrant present. It is a place with a promising future. From its early days as a small settlement to its current status as a thriving city Saint-Zotique has always been a place of growth. The people of Saint-Zotique are proud of their city.
