Saint Vincent de Paul Church stands as a testament to faith and the generosity of oil tycoon Edward Doheny. He funded its construction in the 1920s. The church stands as a symbol of wealth and piety in what was once a very affluent part of Los Angeles. It was built adjacent to the impressive Edward Doheny Mansion and the Stimson House. The church’s dedication in 1925 marked a significant moment. It was only the second Roman Catholic church in Los Angeles to be consecrated.
The story of Saint Vincent de Paul Church isn’t just about its beauty. It’s about its unique history. The church’s design was inspired by Bertram Goodhue’s California Building in Balboa Park. It also echoes the style of Santa Prisca a historic church in Tasco Mexico. Architect Albert C Martin Sr designed the church. He also designed the Million Dollar Theater.
Doheny had a specific vision for his church. He wanted it to dominate the landscape. To ensure this he had the church built at a 45-degree angle. This clever design prevented any future buildings from obstructing its view. Doheny’s influence is visible throughout the church. A statue of Saint Edward for instance bears a striking resemblance to him.
