Gazing upon Saint Thomas the Apostle Church, one might wonder about the stories held within its limestone walls. Saint Thomas the Apostle Church stands proudly at the intersection of 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue in Midtown Manhattan. It has witnessed the changing tides of New York City history since its incorporation in 1824. This magnificent structure, the congregation’s fourth church on this site, is a testament to their enduring faith. The current building, completed in 1914, showcases the French High Gothic Revival style, envisioned by architects Ralph Adams Cram and Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Church wasn’t always located here. The first church, built downtown at Broadway and Houston Street in 1826, was hailed as “the best specimen of Gothic in the city”. Sadly, fire claimed this structure in 1851, necessitating a rebuild at the same location. However, the changing character of the neighborhood prompted a move uptown to 53rd Street and Fifth Avenue in 1870. This second church, designed by Richard Upjohn and his son, met a similar fiery fate in 1905. Remarkably, only the tower survived.

The tragic loss of the third church paved the way for the architectural masterpiece we see today. The 1906 San Francisco earthquake deeply impacted the then-rector, Rev. Ernest M. Stires. He generously donated the church’s building fund to the relief effort. This act of kindness resulted in an outpouring of public support, replenishing the fund and allowing for the construction of the current church. The stunning stained glass windows, created primarily by James Humphries Hogan of James Powell & Sons, depict biblical figures alongside notable American bishops. A remarkable feat of engineering, the church’s stone superstructure, initially built without steel reinforcement, required later additions to ensure its stability.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Church is not just a feast for the eyes. It’s also a symphony for the ears. The renowned Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, along with not one, but three magnificent organs, fill the sanctuary with the rich traditions of Anglican music. The main organ, the Irene D. and William R. Miller Chancel Organ, boasts over 7,000 pipes. Its design echoes the church’s Gothic motifs. This dedication to music has resonated through the years, with organists such as George William Warren, T. Tertius Noble, and Gerre Hancock gracing its console.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Church has always been more than just a place of worship. In the aftermath of 9/11, the church offered solace and support to the British expatriate community. It even hosted an interfaith service addressed by Prime Minister Tony Blair. Today, Saint Thomas the Apostle Church remains a vibrant center of faith and music. Its doors are open every day, welcoming visitors to experience its beauty and history. From its humble beginnings downtown to its grand presence on Fifth Avenue, Saint Thomas the Apostle Church exemplifies the enduring power of faith. It stands as a beautiful testament to the rich tapestry of New York City’s history.
