Hidden within the bustling streets of Staten Island, Saint Roch’s Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It’s a place where stories whisper from stained-glass windows and the echoes of prayers linger in the air. Saint Roch’s Church wasn’t always the grand structure you see today. It began humbly in 1922 as a mission of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Its first pastor, Father Catello Terrone, guided the fledgling congregation. The original church, a modest wooden structure, held a special treasure within its altar stone: relics of Saint Roch, Saint Anthony, Saint Lucy, Saint Rita, and Saint Ann. These sacred fragments connected the community to a rich tapestry of spiritual history. As the years passed, the congregation grew. Around 1928, the need for a larger space became clear. Parishioners rallied together, going door to door selling “bricks” for $1 each to fund the construction of a new church. This collective effort demonstrated their dedication and laid the foundation for the building that stands before you. The new Saint Roch’s Church was dedicated in 1929, a symbol of the community’s growth and unwavering faith. Years later, in 2015, Saint Roch’s merged with St. Adalbert’s Parish. This union brought together two communities, further strengthening the bonds of faith and fellowship that Saint Roch’s embodies. Sadly, the parish school, dedicated by Francis Cardinal Spellman in 1960, closed in 2011 due to declining enrollment. Yet, the spirit of Saint Roch’s endures, a beacon of hope and resilience in the heart of Staten Island.
