Did you know that the Saint Robert Bellarmine Roman Catholic Church in Burbank California has a fascinating history? It’s a story of community perseverance and architectural brilliance. Right here before us stands a testament to faith and the unwavering spirit of its founders.

The Saint Robert Bellarmine Church wasn’t always the grand building we see today. Its story began in the 1930s when the Bayside Hills community was just developing. Catholic families needed a church. They petitioned the Bishop for their own parish. Their request was approved. St Robert Bellarmine was chosen as the patron saint. He was a renowned scholar recently canonized in 1930.

Early Masses were held in a small house. The turnout was so large the police deemed it a hazard. Subsequent Masses were moved to larger spaces like vacant stores. The need for a permanent church became clear. The community actively fundraised. Nearby parishes generously offered support and space.

A prime location was found. The block bounded by 213th and 214th Streets and 56th and 58th Avenues was purchased for $36500. Construction of the church and a recreation hall began in May 1940. The buildings were completed and dedicated in 1941.

The parish continued to grow. By 1948 it became evident that expansion was needed. A new rectory a school and a convent were planned and built. The school opened in 1954 with 475 students. By 1958 enrollment had nearly doubled. The rectory was also completed in 1954. The convent followed in 1959.

By the mid-1960s membership reached 8800. A larger church was needed. Another successful fundraising campaign led to the construction of the present church in 1969. The old church was converted into a gym.

The Saint Robert Bellarmine Church has seen many pastors. Each contributed to its growth and development. The parish has always adapted to changing demographics. It’s a church that has welcomed people from diverse backgrounds. The church even employed a Korean priest to serve the growing Korean community.

Multiple fundraising efforts have ensured the church’s continued improvements and financial stability. These efforts included air conditioning for the church and building up parish reserves.
