Founded in 1923 Saint Philip Missionary Baptist Church has a rich history. It began after a split from another church. Services were initially held under a brush arbor. Rev Johnnie J Bullock was the first pastor. Early members included Brother Jim Dade Sister Mary Dade and others.

The church later moved to a tent in the Mulberry area near DeWalt Texas. Its name was changed to New Saint Phillip. Rev Thomas Robinson became pastor. Brother Jimmie Dade secured land from Mr A L Choen a realtor. This is where the church stands today.

Rev J J Bullock built the first church building. Several pastors followed including Rev Houston Rev C H Jones and Rev R E Edward. Rev D A Goston served for eleven years. Rev J N Williams later led the church for 33 years. He oversaw significant improvements to the church building and its ministry.

On April 13 1998 Rev J DeWitt Clark became pastor. Under his leadership the church experienced growth. He changed the church name back to New St Philip Missionary Baptist Church. He also added several ministries.

Rev C J R Phillips Sr played a crucial role in the church’s history. He purchased the current church building in a leap of faith. He passed away in 1977 while preaching. His sons Rev C J R Phillips Jr and Rev A D R Phillips Sr also served as pastors. In 2011 a major renovation took place. This included new pews a larger pulpit and other upgrades.

The church hosted the 108th session of the National Missionary Baptist Convention of America. Pastor Phillips served as the host pastor. This was a significant undertaking. The event was a success thanks to the church family and friends.
