What if walls could talk? What tales would they whisper from Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church? This church isn’t just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith and resilience, the oldest A.M.E. Church in Georgia. Founded in 1865 by Reverend A. L. Stanford, Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church emerged from the ashes of the Civil War, a beacon of hope for the newly freed African American community. The church’s early years were a testament to its growing influence. One of its pastors was Bishop Henry M. Turner, a prominent figure in the state legislature during Reconstruction and a champion of the Back-to-Africa movement. He led the congregation at Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church from 1870 to 1874. Tragedy struck in 1896 when a fierce storm ravaged Savannah, demolishing the church building. Undeterred, the congregation held services at Odd Fellow’s Hall, their faith unwavering. They rebuilt their beloved church, renaming it St. Phillips Monumental A.M.E. Church in 1897. The journey continued. In 1909, a new, modern brick structure was completed, designed by an African American architect. This building stood as a symbol of progress and pride. Then, in 1961, the church embarked on another chapter, relocating to its current location at Jefferson Street and Park Avenue. Inside Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church, memorial tablets honor the legacy of every bishop and pastor who has served the congregation. These tablets whisper stories of leaders like Reverends B.S. Hannah, D.W. Stephens, C.W. Davis, and Frederick D. Jaudon, “The Walking Preacher,” each leaving their indelible mark. Saint Philip African Methodist Episcopal Church has always been more than a place of worship. It’s a cornerstone of the community, a testament to the strength and enduring spirit of its congregation.
