In 1914 the city was renamed Petrograd. This change occurred during World War I. Then in 1924 it was renamed Leningrad. Finally in 1991 Saint Petersburg got its original name back.

Saint Petersburg is located at 60°00’N and 30°00’E. Pulkovo Observatory is located here. It was used as a zero meridian in the Russian Empire. This replaced the Greenwich meridian.

The subway is the deepest in the world. Its tunnels are 70–80 meters underground. Admiralteiskaya station is the deepest at 86 meters.

Egyptian sphynxes decorate the University Embankment. These artifacts are around 3500 years old. They came from the Mortuary Temple of Amenhotep III. Aleksandr Muraviev brought them to Saint Petersburg.

Architect Rossi Street is known for its perfect proportions. It is 22 meters wide and its buildings are 22 meters tall. The street is 220 meters long.

Alexander Column weighs 613 tonnes. It stands without any support. It commemorates Russia’s victory over Napoleon. It is taller than the Vendôme Column in Paris.
