“It’s truly humbling, isn’t it?” The voice of our guide, filled with an air of reverence, broke the silence. The Saint Peters Missionary Baptist Church stood majestically before us, bathed in the golden light of the setting sun.
“This isn’t just any church, it’s a beacon of faith that’s shone brightly for over a century. The very foundation of Saint Peters Missionary Baptist Church was laid in 1900, in a small house with just nine members. That might seem like a humble beginning, but it had a powerful impact on the community. It was a time when Houston was booming. The city was growing rapidly and the church quickly became a cornerstone for the African American community. ”
“The church wasn’t just about worship, it was a place to gather, a center of support, and a place for community activities. It was a beacon of resilience in the face of segregation. Imagine, people of color facing countless challenges but finding solace and strength within these very walls,” our guide said, her voice laced with a hint of awe. We all looked at the church with a new understanding.
“In 1909, the church acquired its current location. Rev. E.L. Lockett, the pastor at the time, led the building of a new church structure. It was a testament to the growing strength of the congregation. It was in 1967 that this brick structure we see today was completed. The church’s growth symbolized the community’s strength and perseverance. ”
