Gazing up at Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church, can you sense the echoes of history whispering from its walls? This unassuming church, nestled on East 117th Street in East Harlem, holds a story that stretches back to the early days of Catholicism in New York City. Saint Paul’s isn’t just any church. It’s the sixth oldest parish established in the city, a testament to the enduring faith of generations past. In 1834, long before the skyscrapers of Midtown reached for the heavens, this church opened its doors. Bishop John Dubois saw the need for a spiritual home for the growing Catholic community north of Canal Street. He entrusted Father Michael Curran, a seasoned missionary from the Pennsylvania mountains, with the task of building this new community. Father Curran, fluent in Gaelic, was a perfect fit for the scattered and diverse parishioners. He laid the cornerstone in 1835, setting the foundation for a legacy that continues to this day. In 1870, under Father Eugene Maguire, Saint Paul’s expanded its reach. The Sisters of Charity of New York, who had been teaching catechism at the church since 1850, established a parish school. This school, a beacon of education and opportunity, continues to serve the community. It even receives support from the Carmel Hill Program, providing tuition assistance for students in need. The current church building, completed in 1908, stands as a proud symbol of architectural beauty and resilience. Designed by Neville & Bagge in the Romanesque Revival style, its limestone façade and brick structure have witnessed countless moments of joy, sorrow, and prayer. Inside, a marble altar rail and solid oak reredos, added during Father Kane’s tenure, enhance the sacred atmosphere. On June 28, 2016, Saint Paul’s Roman Catholic Church received well-deserved recognition. It was designated a New York City Landmark, solidifying its place in the city’s rich tapestry of history and culture. Saint Paul’s is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the power of faith and community. It’s a place where generations have gathered to celebrate their heritage, seek solace in times of trouble, and build a better future.
