Amidst the vibrant tapestry of Pacific Beach, stands Saint Pauls Lutheran Church. A beacon of faith and community, Saint Pauls Lutheran Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in this coastal neighborhood for over 75 years. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church began its journey in 1943, amidst the tumult of World War II. A small group of faithful individuals, drawn to San Diego’s burgeoning wartime industry, laid the foundation for this enduring institution. They established the church at 1570 Garnet Avenue. Just four years later, they added a one-room school for grades K-8, demonstrating their commitment to nurturing both faith and intellect. The church later relocated to its current home at 1376 Felspar Street. This location places it right across from a baseball diamond and near the Pacific Beach Recreation Center. Pastor Jim Henkell, who joined Saint Pauls Lutheran Church 15 years ago, describes the congregation as “phenomenal”. He aimed to guide the church through a transition, ushering in an “outreach-driven ministry” as the previous pastor retired. Pastor Henkell fondly recalls meeting one of the church’s founding couples, Harold and Evangeline Nelson. They shared stories of the church’s early days. These stories illustrated the dedication and “leaps of faith” that shaped Saint Pauls Lutheran Church. The church’s 75th-anniversary celebration, themed “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever,” reflects the enduring nature of its mission. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church’s commitment extends beyond its walls. It actively addresses the challenges of homelessness in Pacific Beach, offering not just temporary aid but also practical support. This support includes job searching assistance and housing resources. The church strives to build relationships and offer meaningful help to those in need. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church draws a diverse congregation, with members traveling from as far as Carlsbad and Alpine. The sense of community and love among its members is palpable, creating a welcoming atmosphere that transcends geographical boundaries.
