On September 20 1925 a new chapter began. Two small groups merged to form Saint Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church of Los Angeles. Thirty-six souls gathered for a shared purpose. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church was born.

This humble beginning marked a significant moment in Los Angeles’ religious history. The church initially held services in private homes. This intimate setting fostered a strong sense of community. It laid the foundation for the church’s future growth.

Pastor John McDavid from Charlotte North Carolina arrived in 1925. He became the first resident missionary. He led the congregation for twelve years. Under his guidance Saint Pauls Lutheran Church expanded. By 1937 the congregation had grown to 172 members.

A modest church building was purchased in 1926 at 666 East 37th Street. This marked a major step for the burgeoning congregation. It provided a permanent home for worship and fellowship. The church continued to grow and thrive.

Pastor Paul D Lehman continued the work after Pastor McDavid’s passing. The current edifice was dedicated on March 6 1955. This larger building reflected the church’s expanding membership and influence. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church continued its mission. It served the community and expanded its ministries.

Several pastors led Saint Pauls Lutheran Church over the years. Each contributed to the church’s growth and development. The church established a strong youth ministry. Music became a vital part of its worship services. Dr John McDavid Lehman Jr served as Musical Director and Organist since 1978. He continued the legacy of his family’s involvement with the church.

In 1998 Saint Pauls Lutheran Church further solidified its future. It purchased the adjacent Mary Clay Preschool property. This enabled the church to establish its own childcare ministry. This was a significant commitment to the church’s enduring presence in the community. It underscored Saint Pauls Lutheran Church’s dedication to families and children.

The church’s story is one of perseverance growth and community. From humble beginnings in private homes to a dedicated building and robust ministries.
