What if these walls could talk at Saint Pauls Lutheran Church? They would tell tales of faith, resilience, and community. Founded in 1841, Saint Pauls Lutheran Church has been a spiritual home for generations.
Initially, German Lutherans gathered at St. Matthews Evangelical Lutheran Church. But the growing German-speaking population soon required more space. So, a group formed Saint Pauls German Evangelical Lutheran Church.
In October 1842, they laid the cornerstone for their first church at 6th Avenue and 15th Street. This opened on Christmas that year. However, after 18 years, a larger building was needed to accommodate the growing congregation.
After a final service in May 1860, the original church was demolished. A new Romanesque-style edifice opened on the same site in March 1861. It could hold nearly 1,000 people. An organ by Ferris & Stuart filled the rear gallery.
But progress brought challenges. The Sixth Avenue elevated train opened in 1878. Its steam locomotives showered ash and soot. The noise became unbearable. Church officials sought a new location away from this increasingly busy shopping district.
In 1897, land was purchased on West 22nd Street. German architect Francis A. Minuth designed the third and present building of Saint Pauls Lutheran Church. The cornerstone was laid on July 4, 1897. Just seven months later, the church opened on February 13, 1898. It was debt-free.
Built in neo-Gothic style, the limestone facade features two towers. The vaulted interior has galleries on three sides. An apse displays five windows crafted by Mayer & Co. of Munich. Wooden furnishings came from Semmann Wagerin & Co. of Milwaukee.
Throughout its history, Saint Pauls Lutheran Church has been a haven for German immigrants. During World War II, the church faced difficulties. Publication of its newsletter in German was prohibited. Some members were interned. Despite this, Saint Pauls became a center for post-war aid to Germany. Members donated clothing and money.
Today, Saint Pauls Lutheran Church continues to serve its community. Many members work for German companies, embassies, or schools. The EKD sends a pastor from Germany to help meet the needs of these expatriates. Services and programs are conducted in German.
The church’s organ, built by George Jardine & Son in 1897, is a masterpiece. It has 29 ranks. In 1994, James A. Konzelman Organs rebuilt and enhanced it. This ensures its beautiful sound continues to fill the sanctuary. Saint Pauls Lutheran Church stands as a testament to faith, community, and the enduring power of the human spirit.
