“Ship of Pearl” it’s called. A mesmerizing sculpture adorning the pediment of Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church. Right here in front of us stands this magnificent structure. A testament to Boston’s rich history.

Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living history book. Founded in 1818 it represents the ambition of Boston patriots seeking a truly American Episcopal parish. They wanted to break away from the colonial past. They commissioned architects Alexander Parris and Solomon Willard to design something different. Something bold.

The result? A stunning Greek Revival masterpiece. The first of its kind in New England. Imagine the contrast it presented against the existing colonial structures. The light Quincy granite for the main building arrived on the very first railroad in the United States. Then it journeyed by water to its final destination. The Ionic columns are made from brown sandstone. This sandstone came from a quarry near Acquia Creek in Virginia. We now know that enslaved people worked this quarry. This is a significant detail. It reminds us that even grand structures can have complicated and troubling origins.

The pediment though remained unfinished for almost two centuries. The planned bas-relief of Saint Paul preaching before Emperor Agrippa II never materialized. Lack of funds unfortunately stalled the project. Then in 2013 artist Donald Lipski’s “Ship of Pearl” finally filled this empty space. His nautilus-inspired sculpture represents the church’s all-inclusive mission. It’s a symbol of continuous growth and renewal. The blue backdrop is a nod to the color of the Episcopal Church’s shield and flag. At night the sculpture glows dramatically illuminating the whole building.

The interior has also undergone extensive renovation. The current curved apse wasn’t part of the original design. The church also boasts two magnificent pipe organs. One a stunning Aeolian-Skinner is currently awaiting restoration. The other a smaller instrument resides in the chancel. This building has evolved over time reflecting the changing needs and spirit of its community. It serves a diverse congregation including a Chinese Episcopal community and even a Muslim group for Friday prayers.

From its granite exterior to its inspiring sculpture Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church is more than just a church. It’s a symbol of faith resilience and the ongoing journey of a city. It’s a building that connects us to Boston’s past present and future.
