In the heart of Newark, New Jersey, stands Saint Paul Sounds of Praise Church. A beacon of faith and resilience, its story echoes through the decades. Saint Paul Sounds of Praise Church wasn’t always at its current grand location. Its journey began humbly around 1931. A small group, led by Mother Leanna Pinkard, gathered for prayer in a home on Newark Street. Their faith grew, and so did their congregation. They moved from Warren Street to West Kinney Street, seeking larger spaces to accommodate their expanding community. A pivotal moment arrived in 1939 with the arrival of Elder Raymond M. Palmer. He not only led the church to its Washington Street location but also renamed it St. Paul Fire Baptized Holiness Church of God of the Americas. The church’s journey was marked by both triumphs and tribulations. Leaders like Rev. John P. Graham and Rev. J. J. Johnson guided the congregation through the 1950s. Rev. Marion Manners, the church’s first and only female pastor, initiated negotiations for the church’s current location. Rev. Donald Womack’s leadership from 1967 to 1974 brought significant growth, including securing a loan and paying it off within ten years. The legacy of Saint Paul Sounds of Praise Church continued to unfold with the arrival of Rev. Nathaniel Simmons in 1975. He left a thriving church in Chicago to lead a small congregation of 18 members in Newark. Bishop Simmons’ vision revitalized St. Paul. The church disassociated from the FBH Church in 1994. It became St. Paul Sounds of Praise Pentecostal Fellowship Ministries. Under Bishop Simmons’ leadership, the church experienced tremendous growth, necessitating expansions and renovations. His impact on the community was profound, leaving a lasting legacy of faith and service. Bishop Simmons’ work extended beyond Saint Paul Sounds of Praise Church. He founded the Sounds of Praise Pentecostal Fellowship Ministries. He was consecrated and installed to the Bishopric in 1994. His ministry touched lives across the nation and abroad. Even after his passing in 1999, Saint Paul Sounds of Praise Church remains dedicated to his vision. They strive to proclaim Jesus Christ and spread His message of salvation.
