Built in 1834 Saint Paul’s Church stands proudly in East Harlem. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the evolving spirit of New York City. Originally the sixth parish established in the city Saint Paul’s served a predominantly Irish community. Father Michael Curran a missionary from the Pennsylvania mountains spearheaded its construction. His Gaelic fluency proved invaluable among the early parishioners.

The church wasn’t always as grand as it is today. Early services were held in humble houses and barns. The cornerstone was laid in 1835. Subsequent enlargements and renovations shaped its current Romanesque Revival style. Neville & Bagge architects designed the brick limestone edifice completed in 1908. A marble altar rail and solid oak reredos were added later under Father Kane’s pastorate.

Saint Paul’s history is also interwoven with its school. Founded in 1870 by Father Eugene Maguire it was run by the Sisters of Charity. They had taught catechism at Saint Paul’s since 1850. The school even has a Carmel Hill Program offering tuition assistance. This reflects the church’s ongoing commitment to its community.

The demographics of East Harlem shifted over time. The largely Irish congregation was gradually replaced by more Spanish-speaking Catholics. Msgr Drew wisely responded by introducing a Spanish language program. This speaks volumes about the church’s adaptability and its dedication to serving its evolving community. In 2015 Saint Paul’s merged with the Holy Rosary parish. This merger further solidified its role as a spiritual anchor in East Harlem. Today Saint Paul’s Church stands as a living monument to faith perseverance and the ever-changing face of New York City. It’s a place of worship a historical landmark and a vibrant community hub.
