Whispers of history surround Saint Paul Church. This isn’t just any church. It’s a place where stories unfold. A place steeped in the rich tapestry of Philadelphia’s past.

Saint Paul Church stands as a testament to faith resilience and community. Established in 1963 by Archbishop John Cardinal Krol it quickly became a vital part of the East Norriton community. Father Francis Gaughan the first pastor oversaw its establishment. He chose Saint Paul as the patron saint a fitting tribute given Saint Paul’s role as the Apostle to the Gentiles. At its founding Saint Paul Church boasted nearly 800 families and almost 3000 parishioners.

The first Mass wasn’t held in a grand edifice. Instead it was celebrated in the auditorium of Bishop Kenrick High School now Kennedy-Kenrick High School. The congregation then used the rectory chapel for daily Mass. Imagine the devotion of those early parishioners. They tirelessly worked to make their church a reality.

Construction of the church and school began in 1964. The architectural firm of Peter and Paul Getz designed the buildings. The Lloyd F Kershner organization built the combined church-and-school. The Davis Construction Company built the convent. Thirteen classrooms and a parish hall with space for four more classrooms were included. Even the cross displayed on the church’s back wall a unique creation by Wendy Berg a Moore College of Art student. It stands as a symbol of the church’s artistic spirit and the dedication of a young artist.

Today Saint Paul Church continues to serve its community. It stands as a beacon of faith and a symbol of the enduring spirit of Philadelphia. Its history reminds us of the importance of community perseverance and unwavering faith. This isn’t just a church. It’s a living testament to the power of the human spirit. It is a place of solace hope and enduring faith. A place where history continues to breathe.
