Deep in South Philadelphia stands St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church. Can you feel the echoes of faith that resonate within these walls?
St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church has been a beacon of hope and community for decades. It began with a vision in the heart of Rev. Paul Clifton Jackson in 1938. He was a Methodist minister.
Amidst the hardships of the Great Depression, Rev. Jackson sought to establish a church. This church would address the needs of the whole person. It would nurture mind, body, and soul. He assembled a small group of dedicated individuals. Alberta Brown, Bessie Jackson, Emma Jackson, and Ethel Johnson were among them.
Initially known as Community Baptist Church, the congregation first gathered at various locations. Then in September 1938, they found a home at the corner of 21st and Manton Streets. Those five brave souls laid the foundation for what St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church is today.
In 1946, a significant milestone was achieved. The church purchased its building. Members like Robert and Cassella Johnson, Harold and Mary Stevens, and Anderson and Velma Freeman pledged their homes as collateral.
Then in 1950, the storefront was transformed into a chapel. The church was renamed St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church. On September 27, 1950, St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church received its charter with thirty members.
Rev. Jackson’s leadership ended in 1952. Rev. James C. Morris became the pastor. Rev. Morris provided spiritual direction and beautified the church.
In 1958, Rev. James F. Jeffress took over as pastor. Rev. Rudolph Robinson stepped in to provide support. Rev. Robinson became pastor of St. Paul Chapel in June 1961.
Rev. Robinson initiated a building program to erect a new edifice. In 1991, property was secured at the corners of Annin and Federal Streets. Architectural drawings were completed. However, Rev. Robinson passed away in 1993. He will always be remembered as a caring and loving pastor.
In 1995, Rev. Weldon H. Williams, Jr. became pastor. He desired to bring more youth into the church. Rev. Wallace H. Parham served as Interim Pastor in 1998. Later, he was installed as pastor and served for six years.
In 2004, Rev. Jermaine T. Heath, Sr. accepted the position as pastor. Rev. Heath gained recognition for St. Paul Chapel throughout the community. Then in 2017, Rev. Joshua Goodin was elected as the new Senior Pastor.
Today, St. Paul Chapel Baptist Church continues to thrive. It remains a vibrant church in the community. It makes an impact for the kingdom.
