Gazing out across the sparkling waters of Mandraki Harbor, you’ll see it. The Fortress of Agios Nikolaos, better known as Saint Nicolas, stands proudly at the harbor’s edge. This isn’t just a picturesque fort. It’s a time capsule, layered with history dating back to the 15th century. Saint Nicolas wasn’t always a fortress. Originally, a church dedicated to Saint Nicholas graced this spot. This church gave the fort its name. The fort itself arose under the watchful eye of Grand Master Piero Raimondo Zacosta between 1464 and 1467. Its strategic location made it a key player in Rhodes’ defense. The fortress has weathered many storms, both literal and figurative. Earthquakes and Ottoman raids left their mark. This has led to several rounds of reconstruction and expansion. Look closely at the walls. You might spot marble fragments embedded within the stone. Some believe these fragments came from Hellenistic monuments. There’s even a theory they belonged to the Colossus of Rhodes’s pedestal. Centuries later, in the mid-17th century, the French Society of Ottoman Lighthouses added a functioning lighthouse to the fort’s roof. The lighthouse still operates today, a beacon guiding ships into the harbor. Nearby, three historic windmills stand tall. These windmills, remnants of a larger group of thirteen, add to the pier’s unique charm. At night, Saint Nicolas undergoes a transformation. Illuminated against the dark sky, it becomes a truly magical sight. A perfect backdrop for romantic walks and stunning photos.
