In 1940, a determined group of Orthodox Christians planted a seed of faith in San Diego. This seed blossomed into Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church. The church initially found a home in a rented house. Their dream of a permanent sanctuary took root in 1957. The Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church building was erected at its current location on Cherokee Avenue. A few years later, in 1960, a social hall was added. This hall became the heart of the community. Every Sunday after the Divine Liturgy, the aroma of coffee and piroshki fills the air. Friends gather and visitors are warmly welcomed. The Saint Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church continues to serve its community. It offers services in both Slavonic and English, bridging tradition with the present. The church’s founding year of 1940 marks a testament to the enduring power of faith. The Divine Liturgy is held every Sunday at 10:00 am. Vespers takes place on Saturday evenings at 6:00 pm.
