Built in 1924 Saint Monica Catholic Church stands proudly at the corner of South Galvez and First Streets in New Orleans. It wasn’t just a church. It was a beacon of hope. A sanctuary for hundreds of poor Colored Catholic children. Children who otherwise wouldn’t have had access to a Catholic education.
The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament SBS poured their hearts into this project. They started with Sunday school for 150 children. They knew more was needed. Within six months a school was dedicated. Two SBS sisters commuted from Xavier University to run this amazing four-room school that housed all eight grades.
Imagine the scene. Grey walls. Simple classrooms. Children in blue skirts and white starched blouses. Blouses so stiff the collars scratched their necks. Generations of families attended. The Hicks family was instrumental. Nace Hicks Sr a founding member even built altars to the Blessed Mother in his home. His granddaughter Patricia Bayonne-Johnson recalls her own memories of attending St Monica’s School.
The school expanded. More rooms were added. By the time Patricia attended each grade had its own room. She walked to school every day with her cousins. They carried their lunches and books. They shared laughter and friendships. A life that was simple but rich in community. A legacy created within the walls of Saint Monica Catholic Church.
The church wasn’t just bricks and mortar. It was a vibrant community. An annual alumni gathering celebrated its history. The Hicks family donated a card catalog and dictionary stand in memory of Nace Hicks Sr. a testament to their devotion. Pictures show the church standing strong before Hurricane Katrina.
Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. Sadly Saint Monica’s didn’t survive. The church was shuttered. It never reopened. It was merged with two other parishes. It became part of Blessed Trinity Catholic Church on Broad Street.
Though the building is gone the spirit of St Monica lives on. It lives in the memories of those who attended. It lives in the stories shared. It lives in the hearts of those who considered Saint Monica Catholic Church their home. It is a story of faith hope and community. A story that continues to inspire.
