Beneath Dublin’s bustling streets lies a chilling secret. It waits within the vaults of St. Michan’s Church. This isn’t your typical church tour. St. Michan’s Church offers a glimpse into Dublin’s macabre past.

St. Michan’s Church, located on Church Street, is the oldest parish church on Dublin’s northside. Its origins trace back to 1095. Originally, it was a chapel. Then in 1686, the current structure was erected. For over 300 years, it has served Church of Ireland parishioners.

But it is the vaults that draw the curious. They hold mummified remains. The unique environment preserves them naturally. Limestone walls keep the air dry. This creates ideal conditions for mummification.

Enter the crypt. Descend the narrow stone stairway. Pass through large metal chained doors. Here lie the remains of Dublin’s influential families from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

Among the mummies, the Sheares brothers rest. They were republican revolutionaries. They were executed for their role in the 1798 rebellion. The vaults also house the Earls of Leitrim.

One can find Wolfe Tone’s death mask here too. The coffins vary. Wealthy families had decorated ones. The 3rd Earl of Leitrim received a plain coffin. He was considered selfish.

The most famous residents are the “Big Four.” These mummies lie in open coffins. They are known as “The Unknown”, “The Thief”, “The Nun”, and “The Crusader”.

“The Crusader” was a giant for his time. He stood six-and-a-half feet tall. He supposedly participated in the Crusades. His legs are broken to fit the coffin. For years, visitors touched his finger for good luck.

However, St. Michan’s Church has faced challenges. In 2019, vandals damaged several mummies. “The Crusader” was even decapitated. The heads were recovered. A man was jailed for the crime. In June 2024, tragedy struck again. A fire destroyed five mummies including “The Crusader”. A man was jailed for arson.

The organ at St. Michan’s Church has its own story. It is said that Handel practiced on it. He was preparing for the first performance of his Messiah. The organ case dates back to the 18th century.

The church’s history is interwoven with Dublin’s own. It has survived Viking invasions. It has seen rebellions. St. Michan’s Church stands as a testament to time. Despite vandalism and fire, it endures.

St. Michan’s Church is more than a building. It’s a repository of stories. It’s a reminder of life’s fragility. It also highlights the need to preserve history.
