Gazing at Saint Michaels Catholic Church, have you ever imagined its vibrant history? Saint Michaels Catholic Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It has served the Paradise Hills neighborhood of San Diego for over 65 years. Its story is one of growth, resilience, and a deep connection to its diverse parishioners. Saint Michaels Catholic Church traces its beginnings back to 1957. Bishop Charles F. Buddy established the “Catholic Church of Paradise Hills”. The first Mass was held in a rented house on Alleghany Street. Soon after, the parish adopted the name Saint Michaels. As the congregation expanded, they moved to a temporary location, a former theater in Lincoln Acres. The current church on Homedale Street was built in 1958. It was dedicated in 1959. The parish hall and St. Michael Academy were later built by dedicated volunteers. Saint Michaels Catholic Church has always been a hub of activity. It boasts a diverse congregation, predominantly Filipino and Hispanic, with a blend of other ethnicities. The church offers numerous weekend and weekday Masses. These often fill the 800-seat sanctuary. Even after the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance has rebounded, reflecting the community’s enduring faith. St. Michael Academy, sadly, closed its doors in 2020 due to the pandemic’s impact. However, the preschool remains open. The parish hopes to eventually reopen the academy, grade by grade. Saint Michaels Catholic Church continues to evolve. A capital campaign is underway for a new multi-purpose parish center. This center will house the parish office, a social hall, meeting rooms, and an adoration chapel. Saint Michaels Catholic Church represents more than just a building. It symbolizes the unwavering faith and dedication of a community. It has grown from a small gathering in a rented house to a thriving parish of over 3,000 families. Its story is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.
