Who is like God? That’s the meaning of Michael. This is Saint Michael Church in Detroit. It’s a question that resonates deeply within these walls. Saint Michael Church wasn’t always here. Its story began in the early 1974. A parish was planned. Its boundaries were Garfield Clinton River Saal and 19 Mile Road.

Father Lawrence Jackson became the first pastor in June 1974. The first mass wasn’t in this building. It was held at Wyandot Middle School on November 17 1974. It wasn’t until March 13 1975 that Saint Michael Parish officially became a parish of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

The building’s construction started much later. In September 1976 contracts were signed with architects. Groundbreaking finally happened in July 17 1977. The original design was ambitious. It included space for 900 to 1200 people classrooms and offices. The total cost was a hefty $750 000. The dedication was on October 21 1978 by Bishop Thomas Gumbleton.

The church’s evolution continued. In 1987 and 1988 parish offices and a new social hall were added. The structure became a complete circle. Later the parish acquired a former church building renaming it the Fr Lawrence J Jackson Activity Center in 2000. Sadly it was sold in 2014. A youth center replaced it. A reminder of the church’s commitment to its community.

Saint Michael Church is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to faith. It’s a place of worship. It’s a community that embraces the gospel values of hospitality. The name Michael challenges us. It reminds us of our call to be a community of God. As you stand here today. Feel the history. Feel the warmth. Feel the spirit of Saint Michael Church.
