Do you know the story of the church that rose from ashes? I’m talking about Saint Matthew’s here in Brisbane. It stands as a testament to the resilience of the Sherwood Anglican community. Saint Matthew’s wasn’t the first church to grace this spot. In fact, it’s the third. The first Anglican church was built in 1868. A second timber structure replaced it in 1893. Then, disaster struck in 1921. The second church burned to the ground, taking precious records with it. The Brisbane Courier reported the flames engulfing the old wooden structure. The cause remained a mystery. But some speculated it started near the vestry. Undeterred, the parish launched a rebuilding appeal. They raised funds for a new church and a new location. The foundation stone of the current Saint Matthew’s was laid on March 4, 1923, by Archbishop Sharp. It was a moment of triumph. The new church, built of brick on a superior site, was a symbol of hope. The parish even relocated their timber hall from the old site. This provided a venue for meetings and Sunday school. Later, Saint Matthew’s was extended. This accommodated the growing congregation. The church continues to serve the community to this day. It stands in the Interwar Romanesque style. The church features a corrugated iron roof and face brick walls. Saint Matthew’s bears witness to a history of resilience and faith. It is a landmark in Sherwood.
