Founded in 1929 St Matthews Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. This unassuming building on Fidelity Street has witnessed decades of devotion. Its name Fidelity itself speaks volumes about the loyalty and faithfulness of its congregation. The church’s early years were marked by humble beginnings. A small group gathered in the yard of Sister Rosie Breaux. Their shared desire was to spread the gospel. They sought to build a house of God. Reverend M E Roberson led the charge.
Later Reverend T J Anderson guided the church through a period of growth. In 1949 a new church building rose. Sister Annie Richmond spearheaded the fundraising. Deacon Eddie T Jones inspired the design. This structure served the congregation for years.
Reverend Cecil M Davis Sr continued the legacy. Under his leadership a new edifice was built. On April 26 1970 the congregation triumphantly marched to their new home. They sang Weve Come This Far By Faith. The old church became a fellowship hall. The new church was paid off in 1979. This marked their 50th anniversary.
In 1992 Reverend Leroy Lacy Jr became pastor. He ushered in a new era of expansion and renewal. He oversaw the construction of the Leroy Lacy Jr Family Life Center. This state of the art building boasts a multipurpose room and classrooms. It was completed in 2008. The building was a testament to Pastor Lacy’s vision and the congregation’s dedication.
A period of renovation followed in 2003. The church underwent extensive remodeling. It was closed for several months. It reopened with modern improvements. Today St Matthews Baptist Church continues to thrive. It remains a vibrant hub of faith. It is a beacon of hope in the Houston community. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith. It has weathered storms and celebrated triumphs. It continues to serve as a sanctuary for generations of worshippers.
