Built in 1871 Saint Matthews Baptist Church stands before us. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. This wasn’t just any church. It was a beacon of hope for Black residents seeking their own place of worship. Rowen Rogers of New Hope Baptist Church generously donated land. This act of kindness laid the foundation for Saint Matthews. The first log church was affectionately nicknamed “The Little White Church”. It stood humbly by the roadside. Reverend George Perry served as the first pastor until 1882.

The church expanded over the years. Its congregation outgrew its humble beginnings. In 1957 renovations began. Services were held in the basement during the reconstruction. Reverend Ronald E Avery’s leadership brought further growth. The sanctuary was expanded in 1984. More classrooms were added. The Fellowship Hall was remodeled.

The early 2000s saw a new vision for Saint Matthews. A new place of worship was constructed. The project was completed through prayer hard work and faith. The new facility boasts a 1200-seat sanctuary. It includes a media center a conference area new offices and new classrooms.

The year 2001 marked another significant event. The St Matthew Rosenwald School Community Center was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This remarkable achievement demonstrates the church’s enduring impact on the community. Saint Matthews continues to thrive. It offers numerous ministries and outreach programs. The church purchased buses to transport members. A fully equipped computer lab provides educational support. Meals of Love and Ruth’s Closet are ongoing community outreach programs. Children’s Church and Gen-Z Teen Church cater to the spiritual growth of young people. In 2016 a logo was created. Online giving was added to the website in 2018. The pandemic necessitated online church services in 2020. The church continues to expand its reach. Plans are underway to build a Family Life Center. The journey of Saint Matthews Baptist Church is a testament to the power of faith community and perseverance. It’s a story of growth adaptation and unwavering dedication to serving God and neighbors.
