Ready to explore a spiritual landmark? Today, we’re standing before St. Matthew’s Baptist Church. This church carries a rich history within its walls.
St. Matthew’s Baptist Church was founded on June 2, 1926. Rev. Jerome Harris started it in his sister’s home. The home was located at 626 Lenox Avenue in New York City. Josephine Harris, Clara Harris, Ida Tullah, and James Desverney were also co-workers.
After Rev. Harris passed away, other pastors led the church. These included Rev. Bonaparte, Rev. T. J. Herbert, and Rev. David Licorish. Also, there were Rev. Otis Obotany and Rev. John Tribble. During some periods, St. Matthew’s operated without a pastor. Dedicated members ensured the church remained active. Sister Bertha Simmons Blaylock headed these members.
A new era dawned when Rev. Dr. John J. Sass arrived in September 1946. St. Matthew’s Baptist Church was then at 2777 Eighth Avenue. Later, it moved to 43 Macombs Place. Under Rev. Sass, the church grew significantly. The congregation needed more space. Members agreed to build a new church on the property.
Rev. Sass watched many members pass away before the dream was realized. Yet, their shared vision came to life. St. Matthew’s Baptist Church became Harlem’s first modern edifice in a century. The congregation marched into the new building on July 21, 1967.
The new edifice included a chapel and a balcony. It also featured off-street parking. Full central air conditioning and heating systems were installed. There was a complete kitchen and a fellowship hall. A soundproof nursery and administrative offices were also included. The seating capacity was about one thousand people.
Rev. Dr. John J. Sass served St. Matthew’s Baptist Church for fifty-four years. He retired on August 20, 2000. The church was saddened by his death on March 11, 2001.
Rev. Jimmie Howell became the Supply Pastor on August 27, 2001. He was then called to the pastorate on September 17, 2001. His installation occurred on December 9, 2001.
During Rev. Howell’s leadership, the ministerial staff grew. The late Rev. Francis LeGree and Rev. Hyacinth Johnson were part of the staff. Ministers Mary A. Nesbit and Shirley Ruffin also served.
From 2006 to 2007, Rev. Howell helped rename a part of Macombs Place. It became Rev. Dr. John J. Sass Place. This event was celebrated in March 2007.
Rev. Howell resigned in June 2011.
Rev. Dr. Lisa Jenkins Brown was installed on November 10, 2013. She became the tenth pastor. She also made history as the first woman to pastor St. Matthew’s Baptist Church.
Today, St. Matthew’s Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith. It embodies community and perseverance. Its history reflects the strength and vision of its members. Take a moment to appreciate its significance in Harlem.
