Did you know St. Mary’s Church on Grand Street in Manhattan is more than just a beautiful building? It’s a testament to the resilience and faith of New York’s early Irish immigrants.

St. Mary’s Church stands proudly at 438-440 Grand Street. It is nestled between Pitt and Attorney Streets in the Lower East Side. Established in 1826, it served the growing Irish community. St. Mary’s is the third-oldest Catholic parish in New York. The church is preparing to celebrate its bicentennial in 2026.

Imagine the scene in the early 19th century. Irish immigrants arriving in New York sought a place to worship and connect. St. Mary’s provided that sanctuary. The first services were held in a former Presbyterian church on Sheriff Street. Father Hatton Walsh served as the first pastor.

But their journey wasn’t without challenges. In 1831, anti-Catholic sentiments flared. Nativists set fire to St. Mary’s Church. The church was damaged but not destroyed. This act of violence spurred the community to organize. In 1836, the Ancient Order of Hibernians established its first New York chapter nearby. They defended against anti-immigrant aggression.

In 1832, the cornerstone for the present St. Mary’s Church was laid. The dedication took place in June 1833. Father William J. Quarter, later the first bishop of Chicago, presided.

Originally designed in the Greek Revival style, St. Mary’s underwent significant changes. In 1864, Patrick Charles Keely designed a Romanesque facade with twin spires. Lawrence O’Connor made additional alterations in 1871.

The church’s history is intertwined with prominent figures. Rev. Michael McKenna, who was an Irish nationalist, served as an assistant pastor in 1868. Later, he founded St. Rose of Lima parish. Charles Edward McDonnell, later Bishop of Brooklyn, was assigned as curate in 1878.

St. Mary’s also boasts a rich musical heritage. The church has housed several organs. Henry Erben built organs for St. Mary’s in 1834, 1853, and 1875.

Listen for the bell of St. Mary’s. It is the first bell hung in a Catholic Church in New York. The bell rings once a day at noon. It also rings on Pentecost. This tradition calls the community to prayer and goodwill. The bell remains silent during Lent. This symbolizes religious contemplation. Members and guests can ring the bell themselves. They only need to call the rectory to schedule a time.

Today, St. Mary’s Church continues to serve a diverse congregation. While its roots are Irish, the parish now includes Dominican and Puerto Rican families. St. Mary’s Church is a landmark. It represents faith, resilience, and community in the heart of the Lower East Side.
