Originally, Saint Mary’s Church was part of the Episcopal Church. But under Bishop Mote’s guidance, it withdrew on November 28, 1976. It joined the Diocese of the Holy Trinity. This later became the Anglican Catholic Church.

Bishop Mote arrived in Denver in 1951. He witnessed the city’s expansion. University Park became a central location. Saint Mary’s Church adapted to these changes.

James O. Mote had an interesting background. He was born in 1922 and achieved Eagle Scout status. During World War II, he served as a chaplain’s assistant. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and earned a Bronze Star. After graduating from Nashotah House Seminary, he became an Episcopal priest in 1952. He joined Saint Mary’s Church and served there for 40 years.
