Established in 1845 Saint Marys Cemetery rests peacefully in West Roxbury. It’s one of the oldest Catholic cemeteries in the Archdiocese of Boston. More than 20000 people are buried here. A full-time staff of three plus a part-timer maintain this sprawling 80-acre site. Imagine the quiet dignity of this place. The constant tending of the grounds. The countless stories whispered on the breeze.

Saint Marys Cemetery is under the watchful eye of a Cemetery Council. Six parishioners help set policies. The parish pastor acts as director and chairperson. Robert O’Connor another key figure worked here for over 25 years. He served as executive director and vice-chair of the Council. The Council meets regularly. They address concerns. They plan for the future. One major focus is expansion. They also promote awareness of the sacredness of the cemetery.

The cemetery continually adapts to the changing needs of the Catholic community. They built a Garden Mausoleum. It houses 320 crypts. They also added a Lawn Crypt system. This saves space reduces costs and maintains the cemetery’s garden-like atmosphere. A Columbarium provides space for 112 cremation urns. A recent expansion project added 15 acres. A new bridge crosses Glover’s Brook. This ensures the cemetery’s future for generations to come. The Memorial Day Liturgy is a highlight. It draws over 250 attendees each year.

The records for Saint Marys Cemetery are kept at the church rectory. This is located at St Mary’s Church on High Street in Dedham. Contact information is available. Directions are readily accessible. Saint Marys Cemetery is more than just a resting place. It’s a living testament to faith community and history. It’s a place of quiet contemplation. It’s a place of remembrance.
