A Modernist jewel box. That’s how one writer described Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church. Standing before this architectural marvel in New York City’s East Village you can appreciate the description.

Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a living testament to the history of Carpatho-Rusyn immigrants in the United States. Established in 1912 during a wave of immigration the church initially used a former Welsh Presbyterian church.

But this wasn’t to last. The current structure a stunning example of Modernist design was completed in 1962. Designed by Reverend Cajetan J B Baumann a Franciscan friar and architect the church is remarkable. It was the first all-glass church in the country. Its design emulates early Christian temples in Greece. The estimated cost in 1958 was nearly a million dollars.

The church’s 50-foot tall stainless steel bell tower is a Modernist interpretation of a traditional bell tower. It houses the bell from the original 13th Street location. The tower’s design is striking. It’s described as “glistening metal strands that reach up flame-like.”

Saint Mary’s is more than just a building. It’s a community hub. It serves a significant Slavic community in the East Village. The church’s location amongst other Slavic Orthodox and Catholic parishes isn’t accidental. It reflects the rich cultural tapestry of this historic neighborhood. Look closely and you’ll see.

Imagine the stories held within those walls. The prayers whispered the hymns sung the lives celebrated and mourned. Saint Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church is a place of faith a place of history and a truly beautiful building. A true architectural gem in the heart of New York City.
