Once a parish for German Catholics, the Church of the Assumption stands as a testament to New York City’s diverse religious history. The Church of the Assumption is located at 427 West 49th Street in Manhattan. It once thrived under the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York.

Let’s step back to 1858. Father Raffeiner established this parish specifically for German Catholics on the Upper West Side. Imagine the relief and joy of these immigrants finding a spiritual home.

In 1859, Archbishop John Hughes laid the cornerstone for a grander Church of the Assumption. The dedication took place on December 4 of the same year. This rapid construction highlights the community’s eagerness for a dedicated place of worship.

For years, the basement of the Church of the Assumption served a dual purpose. It was both a school and a parish hall. Then, in 1873, a separate school building was erected. Pastor Ströhle oversaw this expansion. By 1914, the school boasted 450 pupils. The School Sisters of Notre Dame staffed the school. Their convent was conveniently located on 49th Street.

Now, picture the scene in October 1910. Reverend John P. Neumann steps in as pastor of the Church of the Assumption. His leadership led to the creation of the Assumption Lyceum. This club provided a haven for the young men of the parish.

The Church of the Assumption played a vital role in the lives of its parishioners. It offered education, spiritual guidance and a sense of community. Today, though no longer a parish church, its history remains etched in the city’s narrative. The Church of the Assumption reminds us of the waves of immigrants who shaped New York.
