Founded on January 1 1940 Saint Mary Magdalen Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its story is one of rapid growth and adaptation. From humble beginnings it blossomed into a vibrant parish.

Initially a five-room frame residence served as both school and convent. Sister Mary Patricia of the Incarnate Word Sisters was the first principal. Forty-five students filled the classrooms. The small building quickly proved too small. Wartime restrictions made expansion difficult. Yet the school thrived. Additions were made year after year. The school expanded to include grades from Kindergarten through Eighth.

By 1956 enrollment topped 972 students. The parish’s growth led to the creation of new parishes. Saint Gregory the Great and Holy Spirit were born from Saint Mary Magdalen’s. The rapid expansion showcases the strong community spirit. The dedication of the people ensured that the church and school continued to grow.

Challenges arose in the 1970s. Enrollment declined. The Incarnate Word Sisters could no longer staff the school. Monsignor Herbst’s determination prevented closure. He sought the help of the Presentation Sisters. They stepped in and ensured the school’s survival.

The next twenty years brought more changes. A major expansion project called “Vision 90” was undertaken. This included building a new parish center and a gymnasium. An asbestos removal project and furnace replacement posed financial hurdles. Despite these challenges Saint Mary Magdalen continued to adapt.

In 2010 the school joined the Good Shepherd Network. This collaborative effort focused on enhancing Catholic identity and academic excellence. New programs were launched. A dual language program and 1:1 Chromebook initiative helped modernize education. Grants and ongoing renovations reflected the ongoing commitment to the community. The church continues its mission offering multiple services each week. Saint Mary Magdalen Church serves as a gathering place for worshippers and a center of community life.
