Established in 1953 Saint Mary Magdalene started humbly. Masses were initially held in the homes of 14 families. Can you imagine the intimate gatherings the shared prayers? As the Bay Park area boomed after World War II so did this parish. The current church and school were completed in 1957 a symbol of this rapid expansion.
The construction was quite a feat. Steel was transported from the San Diego port to build this magnificent structure. Think of the effort the community spirit involved in bringing this vision to life. The first Mass in the new church was a momentous occasion celebrated in the auditorium before the main sanctuary was ready.
More than just a place of worship Saint Mary Magdalene Church is deeply connected to the School of the Madeleine. This large Catholic elementary school opened alongside the church in 1957. It has grown to include classes from preschool through eighth grade. The school continues to foster faith learning and community just like the church.
Through the years Saint Mary Magdalene has seen many changes. Different pastors have guided the parish each leaving their mark on its history. Renovations in 1995 further enhanced the church making it a beautiful place for worship today. The church has expanded from its humble beginnings to over 1480 registered families.
