In 1911, a small seed of faith was planted in Humble, Texas. This seed blossomed into St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church. St. Mary Magdalene began as a mission of Immaculate Conception Church in Harrisburg. Imagine the humble beginnings. The first church, a simple white wooden structure, was built in 1915. It stood at the corner of Avenue F and Higgins Street. Later, the entire church building was moved to its current location on South Houston Avenue. For over fifty years, from 1911 to 1965, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate nurtured St. Mary Magdalene. These priests, from their headquarters in San Antonio, guided the growing congregation. St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church celebrated a significant milestone in 2012. The church commemorated its centennial anniversary with a special Mass. Daniel Cardinal DiNardo led the celebration. Father Michael Carmody, the pastor of St. Mary Magdalene, concelebrated. Several former pastors also joined, including retired Msgr. Paul Procella and Msgr. Adam McClosky. A memorial plaque, donated by the Jess Fields Family, was blessed during the centennial celebration. The inscription on the plaque reads, “On this day we celebrate the centennial of the founding of St. Mary Catholic Community, then a mission operated by the Oblate Fathers from Immaculate Conception parish, Harrisburg, Texas. May God bless all of us who reap the blessings from the efforts of those who have blazed the trail we walk, as well as those who will continue the pilgrim journey after us.” St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church continues to serve its community. It offers various services. These include daily and weekend Masses in both English and Spanish. The church also hosts special events. It provides a place for both spiritual growth and community connection.
