Three and a half million bricks. That’s how many it took to build Saint Martin’s Church. Can you imagine the sheer scale of that undertaking?

Right here before you stands Saint Martin’s Church a magnificent testament to colonial architecture. It’s not just a church it’s a piece of history a fusion of Indo-European styles. Built between 1929 and 1931 the church was designed by Arthur Gordon Shoosmith. He collaborated with the renowned Sir Edward Lutyens. Shoosmith cleverly blended Western design with local materials. This ensured comfort during Delhi’s hot summers. The result? A building that’s both aesthetically pleasing and practical.

The exterior resembles a fort. Observe the buttresses and parapets. The few windows add to the fortress-like appearance. Yet inside Saint Martin’s Church is surprisingly different. The interior is strikingly similar to a Roman basilica. A high rounded dome dominates the space. Curved arches gracefully extend towards the vaulted roof. Unlike many colonial churches in India this one lacks Gothic elements. This unique design is a departure from the typical colonial style seen elsewhere in Delhi’s civil lines.

The church has seen its share of history. The first baptism was performed in 1931. Interestingly it was Shoosmith’s own daughter. The church hosted significant visitors including Lord and Lady Mountbatten in 1947. Even today Saint Martin’s Church remains a vibrant place of worship. Services are conducted in both English and Hindi. The Sunday mass is particularly well-attended a testament to its enduring appeal.

The restoration work undertaken in 2000 saved this architectural marvel. The leaky roof and decaying interior were repaired. This was a victory for heritage lovers and historians who fought to preserve this important landmark. Today Saint Martin’s Church continues to stand tall. It is a symbol of faith resilience and architectural ingenuity. A true gem in the heart of Delhi.
