“Let her burn. Let her burn.” Can you imagine those words shouted in the parking lot of a church? That was the scene here at Saint Martin of Tours Catholic Church in 1949. A crazed UCLA art student set fire to this very church.
Saint Martin of Tours Church stands as a beacon of faith. It is nestled in the affluent Brentwood section of Los Angeles. This parish was founded in 1946. It quickly became a focal point for the community.
The land beneath Saint Martin of Tours Church has an interesting past. It was once an orchard on actor Gary Cooper’s estate. Ground was broken for the church on February 9, 1947. The original cost was estimated at $150,000. Furnishings added another $25,000. The church was dedicated in November 1947.
Father Augustine C Murray was the first pastor. He served for 28 years. Lawrence Monsignor O’Leary followed. He served for 24 years. Effective July 1, 2021, Fr. Paul Fitzpatrick was named pastor of Saint Martin of Tours Church.
Now, about that fire. In March 1949, an arsonist struck. He was described as wild-eyed. After setting the fire, he stood in the parking lot. He screamed, “The church is afire. Let her burn. Let her burn.” The pastor and staff tried to stop him. He struck a staff member and threw a statue at the fire. Damages amounted to $5,000. The next day, Father Murray urged forgiveness. He asked the congregation to pray for the young man.
In 1983, Saint Martin of Tours Church built a parish center. It is used for education and social functions. The church itself was renovated in 1989.
The architecture of Saint Martin of Tours Church is Moorish. It stands out with its unique design.
Saint Martin of Tours School opened in 1954. The Sisters of St Joseph of Carondolet ran it until 1979. In 1998, a new wing was added. It included offices, a library, and science labs. Today, it is a premier preparatory academy.
Being in an affluent area, Saint Martin of Tours Church has connections to celebrities. Movie actor Frank Fay was a founding member. Mass was even held in his pool house before the church was built. In 1979, the parish bought Gary Cooper’s estate. It was used as a convent and playground.
Frank Fay and Joe E Brown started an annual social event. It was first called “Murray’s Follies.” Later, it became the “Leprechaun Ball.” This tradition continues. Many celebrities have participated over the years.
Saint Martin of Tours Church has hosted many celebrity events. Romina Francesca Power was baptized here in 1951. Funerals for James Gleason, Gene Fowler, Pat O’Brien, and John Candy were held here. Nicole Brown Simpson’s funeral also took place here. Chick Hearn’s funeral in 2002 drew sports legends and was simulcast to thousands.
Masses at Saint Martin of Tours Church are in English. The weekend schedule includes Saturdays at 5:30 p.m. Sundays offer services at 7:30 a.m., 9:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 5:30 p.m. Weekday Mass is at 8:15 a.m.
