Stepping into the heart of Harlem, find yourself before the magnificent Saint Marks United Methodist Church. Did you know this church boasts a history as rich and vibrant as the neighborhood itself? Saint Marks United Methodist Church wasn’t always located here. Founded in June 1871 by Reverend William F. Butler, it began its life in Midtown Manhattan. The congregation, originally part of Mother African Methodist Episcopal Church in Philadelphia, sought to create a space specifically for African Americans in New York City. They worshipped at several locations, moving from Washington Hall on Broadway to West 35th Street and then to West 48th and 53rd Streets, following their growing community as it migrated north. Saint Marks United Methodist Church achieved several notable firsts. It became the first church to have a literary forum open to all denominations. It was also the first African American congregation to gain full membership in the then all-white annual conference. In a testament to their vision and ambition, Saint Marks was the first African American congregation to build a church costing over half a million dollars. This impressive feat culminated in the construction of the current Gothic-inspired building we stand before today. This edifice, situated between 137th and 138th Streets and St. Nicholas and Edgecombe Avenues, was completed in 1926. Its stone facade and imposing central tower mirror the Collegiate Gothic architecture of the nearby City College campus. Inside, a wide sanctuary with a grand curved gallery awaits. The church’s influence extended beyond its walls, with several pastors deeply involved in community service. Reverend Dr. William H. Brooks, pastor from 1897 to 1923, co-founded the NAACP and the National Urban League. He was considered one of the most politically active African American ministers of his time. Another notable figure, Reverend Dr. John J. Hicks, who served the church starting in 1964, was involved with the NAACP and the Harlem YMCA. He also established a fund to support both church and community members. By the mid-20th century, Saint Marks United Methodist Church had become a pillar of social work in Harlem. It established programs for all ages in 1958. Later, in 1969, it founded the Harlem Social Action Research Institute. This institute aimed to strengthen social services through community engagement and collaboration with other churches. As you stand before Saint Marks United Methodist Church, take a moment to appreciate its journey. It’s a journey that reflects the resilience, ambition, and deep-rooted faith of the Harlem community it serves.
